Super League Magic Weekend: Wakefield Trinity score nine tries and pull off 48-6 demolition of Castleford Tigers

Wakefield Trinity scored nine tries in a 48-6 routing of Castleford Tigers in the opening match of day two of Magic Weekend at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Wakefield had a comprehensive 20-0 half-time lead thanks to two tries from Cam Scott plus efforts from Tom Johnstone and Caleb Hamlin-Uele, Jack Sinfield converting two.

They then extended it with five more tries from Lachlan Walmsley, Tyson Smoothy, Josh Rourke and seconds for Hamlin-Uele and Johnstone, Sinfield adding eight points with the boot.

Jason Qareqare managed to go over late on for Castleford but it offered little consolation in what was a demolition job.

With the victory, Wakefield keep themselves well within the top six on 24 points. Castleford, meanwhile, stay rooted in ninth in the Super League table.

Wakefield were always going to be the favourites heading into this West Yorkshire derby and they proved why by getting on the scoresheet early. In the third minute, they whipped it out to Scott on the right edge to go fiving in at the corner for the 4-0 advantage.

It looked like Daryl Powell's side were going to run away with the contest as Scott thought he had gone in for his second and then Johnstone sent a flick pass back to Will Tate, but with a knock-on in the build-up to Scott's chance and then Johnstone's foot in touch, Wakefield were left waiting.

Eventually, they increased their lead in the 15th minute through Johnstone as the England hopeful finished off some silky hands on the left with an acrobatic finish.

Hamlin-Uele then made an immediate impact when he entered the field and barrelled over from close range. Sinfield converted to put Wakefield 16-0 ahead with 25 minutes gone.

Before the break, Scott made sure to get his second. The centre charged through a gap to crash over once again and with the conversion missed, Wakefield went in at half-time with a 20-point advantage.

Wakefield continued their 'Magic' show that they had in the first and it was Walmsley who was first to oblige with a sensational flying finish to move his side 24-0 into the lead.

It was not long until they were in once again, a Smoothy barge over on the 51st minute, followed by a Rourke conversion making Castleford's afternoon go from bad to worse.

Hamlin-Uele then crossed for the easiest of tries to mark his double, Castleford's defence falling apart under the pressure of the occasion as Johnstone made it two for himself just minutes later.

The Tigers thought they had finally hit back through Jason Qareqare but on review, it was clear that Walmsley was taken out in the air contesting the kick and so Castleford's four points moved back to zero on the scoreboard.

Wakefield's ninth try came as Rourke jumped highest for a kick and extended his side's already mammoth advantage.

Castleford did get the final word of the game as Qareqare got the try he had been hunting all afternoon, but it was scant consolation.

Wakefield coach Daryl Powell to Your Site:

"I thought we started really well. We probably left a few tries out in the first half. But the boys were outstanding on both sides of the ball.

"Defensively, I thought we were really tough. We built a score for ourselves and we went along with it in the second half.

"I blame myself as we were pushing for more points. So that's on me.

"We're in a great place and a few weeks back Wigan beat us but we've built back from that. I suppose we'll find out what we're capable of when we play Hull KR next week.

"But we've got a great group of players, quality guys who work hard. I thought we played outstandingly well today."

Castleford Tigers coach Ryan Carr to Your Site:

"We just didn't give ourselves a chance to get started with errors and penalties.

"That turned into 40 per cent of the ball for an 80-minute game; it's very rare in a game you get only 40 per cent of the ball.

"We put that down to individuals in key moments. Everything we got wrong we spoke about in the week and we trained for it."
