Sunderland transfer news: Granit Xhaka staying at Stadium of Light after Chelsea bid for Black Cats captain rejected

Captain Granit Xhaka will be staying at Sunderland, Your Site News can exclusively confirm.

The Black Cats rejected an £8m bid from Chelsea for the 33-year-old midfielder last Sunday - but the Switzerland international, who was instrumental in Sunderland's impressive first season back in the Premier League will be staying in the North East.

Sunderland have made it clear Xhaka was never for sale but he was initially attracted by the prospect of reuniting with Xabi Alonso, having enjoyed a successful spell under the new Chelsea boss at Bayer Leverkusen. Xhaka was open to exploring the opportunity.

However, following discussions with the club, Xhaka has reaffirmed his commitment to Sunderland and now wishes to remain on Wearside.

The opportunity to lead Sunderland in the Europa League next season, together with the club's long-term ambition and trajectory, were understood to be decisive factors in his decision.

Xhaka's strong relationship with Sunderland supporters and his connection with the club have also played an important role in his desire to continue his journey at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland consider Xhaka a key figure both on and off the pitch and look forward to him playing an important role in the club's upcoming campaign.

Former Arsenal midfielder Xhaka has two years left on his Sunderland contract, having signed for the club for £13m last summer.
