Magic Weekend 2026: Time for Super League to take over Everton and put on extraordinary show

To have the essence of 'magic', something must have the ability to transport someone out of their everyday life, out of the ordinary, and into the extraordinary.

It will have remnants of what they know, they will recognise parts of it, but then there will be a sprinkle of something extra - a shimmer that might not usually be there week-to-week.

That is what Super League aims to do when it puts on its Magic Weekend show.

Will there be rugby league matches? Yes. Will there still be huge runs, massive tackles, and gravity-defying finishes? Of course.

But, as 12 of Super League's 14 teams descend on a ground known for footballing drama - Everton's new home, Hill Dickinson Stadium - they will be looking to brashly and proudly announce that this is the weekend on which all eyes can turn to Super League.

Magic is on Merseyside.

The purpose of Magic Weekend has been to take rugby league to cities that might not usually have eyes on the sport. Newcastle became its home across many successful stagings of the event, with Anfield, the Etihad Stadium, Cardiff's Principality and more having hosted the two-day bonanza.

It marks the second time that Liverpool has hosted the event but this time the blue portion of the city, rather than the red, will be helping to put on the show.

"Magic allows you to show your love and your pride for rugby league in being a rugby league supporter," said Your Site Rugby League's Brian Carney.

"Las Vegas has done much the same as well in the sense that it is an annual event that a rugby league fan, whoever they support, can go to and feel part of a huge occasion.

"We haven't got everything right about Magic Weekend over the last 20 years but it looks like this year will be very different.

"I am looking forward to a sold-out Hill Dickinson, with passionate rugby league fans, showing the locals what it is all about."

This stadium is not new to rugby league. It hosted England's second Test against Australia during the historic Ashes series last autumn.

Its layout suits Super League. As a sport with loud crowds and partisan fanbases, the closeness of the crowd to the pitch creates an intense atmosphere, with players feeling the vibrations of the roars around them.

They will feel those when many a historic rivalry looks to use its platform to elevate the sport once more.

Wigan Warriors will face St Helens in another Magic edition of an age-old derby, Leeds Rhinos and Bradford Bulls will renew their rivalry of the early noughties, Hull KR and Hull FC will divide into East and West once again.

These are derbies, rivalries, foes, that transcend rugby league's reach and it will be down to them to show why these battles born out of proximity, with families split, lines drawn, are worthy of the attention they will attract.

Wigan and Saints is a rivalry rooted in animosity that sees two of Super League's most successful teams - separated by just eight miles and a big hill - go head to head. And this time they have a point to prove.

After his side's Challenge Cup semi-final routing of Saints, Wigan head coach Matt Peet questioned St Helens' "identity".

St Helens will want to show that identity is still very much intact with a scalp of their arch enemy on the big stage with youth players at the core of it.

Leeds Rhinos' resurgence has been palpable under Brad Arthur and so far, they look like the team to beat. Back in the early 2000s, it was 'Bullmania' that they had to grind to a halt in order to find success. Now, they will want to own them. Jake Connor will want to own them on a field on which he was denied the opportunity to represent his country despite being named the Man of Steel.

Hull KR are licking their wounds after a bruising defeat to the Rhinos but they have had the better of the Black and Whites over recent years. They will need that once again to keep their fans content as they look to cement themselves in the top six.

Wakefield are in the top six and do not want to slow down. To keep themselves on the road to hopefully doing "something special", as their head coach Daryl Powell would put it, they will want to cruise past the team that Powell once led all the way to a Grand Final.

Magic is on Merseyside and with storylines primed with many a twist and turn, record ticket sales, and artists Example and Jax Jones ready to take the show to another level, the stage is very much set.

Super League now just has to pull the rabbit out of the hat.

Your Site will show every game of the Super League live this season, including two matches each round exclusively live. The remaining five matches will be broadcast on
