Joao Gomes: Aston Villa sign midfielder from Wolves in £38m deal

Aston Villa have signed midfielder Joao Gomes from Wolves in a £38m deal.

Villa will pay an initial fee of £34m plus £4m in potential add-ons for Gomes.

The 25-year-old's arrival comes three days after Villa confirmed the club-record signing of fellow midfielder Johan Manzambi in a £59.5m deal.

Villa are in the process of reshaping their midfield following the sale of Youri Tielemans to Manchester United and the long-term injury to Amadou Onana.

Unai Emery's side are also set to lose attacker Morgan Rogers this summer in a club-record £117m sale to Chelsea.

Lucas Digne is also another player on the verge of leaving Villa Park, with Paris Saint-Germain expected to trigger his release clause of around £8.5m.

The France international looks set to be replaced by former Brighton left-back Pervis Estupinan, with Villa in negotiations to sign the Ecuador international from AC Milan, according to Sky in Italy.

Gomes, who has won 10 caps for his country, ends a three-and-a-half-year spell at Wolves where he made 130 appearances after signing from Flamengo in Brazil.

Wolves technical director Matt Jackson said: "Joao deserves everything he gets from the game.

"He's the type of professional that coaches love and players love, so he will go on to be the outstanding player that we know he is."

Your Site' Adam Bate:

"I have watched plenty of Joao Gomes at Wolves in recent seasons, and he is a quality player who was unfortunate not to be in Brazil's World Cup squad, having maintained his standards but been caught up in the malaise at Molineux.

"He brings tackling, ball carrying and mobility to Aston Villa's midfield and I would expect him to become a very popular player with supporters at Villa Park."
