Enzo Fernandez says Argentina played with 'pride' and 'humility' as FIFA investigate World Cup final behaviour

Enzo Fernandez has praised Argentina for playing with "pride" and "humility" at the 2026 World Cup after it was confirmed FIFA will investigate the team's behaviour after the final.

The defending champions , with Ferran Torres' strike in the 106th minute securing a second World Cup title.

Fernandez was sent off in the game after receiving a second yellow card for a foul on Pau Cubarsi.

In a message on Instagram on Tuesday evening, the Chelsea midfielder said: "As time goes by, you realise there is something much bigger than just a result.

"For years, this group has represented us in the best possible way. It teaches that competing isn't just about winning; it's about giving your all for the jersey and never giving up.

"It has been a privilege to be part of a group that always stepped up, competed at the highest level, and defended these colours with pride, humility, and commitment."

The FIFA investigation was announced after a series of incidents following the final whistle in New York/New Jersey.

Leandro Paredes was shown a red card for violent conduct after he grabbed and pushed Spain players, including Eric Garcia and Gavi.

Nahuel Molina attempted to knock over Rodri as the Manchester City midfielder celebrated winning the World Cup, while Argentina coach Roberto Ayala also attempted to punch Dani Olmo in the face.

The whole Argentina squad turned their back on the trophy celebration as Spain lifted the World Cup.

A FIFA statement said: "The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FDC with regard to the post-match incidents. Further details will be communicated by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee once the prosecutor's report has been completed."

Emi Martinez is considering whether it is time "to step aside" from international football, after his side's 1-0 defeat to Spain in the World Cup final.

The 33-year-old has won 67 caps for his country and played every minute during the 2026 World Cup. He was also a key member of the squad in 2022 as Argentina won the World Cup and he claimed the Golden Glove award.

"I dreamt we'd win it again, I dreamt of bringing it back to Argentina and making history once more," Martinez wrote in a post on Instagram.

"The truth is, the pain is hard to explain. There are many things to reflect on and how to move forward, and if it's time to step aside.

"I'm so sorry, I truly tried my best to help my country and my team-mates."
